Akita

Geography

Akita Prefecture - “Autumn Fields”, got its name due to the largest and most fertile rice fields in the country. Akita, like all Japanese prefectures facing the coast of the Sea of Japan, is rich in precipitation. In spring and autumn it is flooded with rain, in winter it snows, covering peasant houses with roofs. The distance from the main industrial centers, the sweet and ancient provincialism, determines the appearance and character of Akita. Nowadays, the Japanese, satiated with the fruits of urbanization, are rushing to their ecologically clean northern expanses. Spending at least a week on the shores of a clean lake or river, catching fish that you can eat without fear of poisoning, listening to the sound of centuries-old trees and not power lines overhead - this is exactly what the dream of the average Japanese looks like today. And here Akita comes to the fore, because its territory is 12 thousand square kilometers and 10 thousand of them are given over to national natural parks and reserves. 200-year-old cedar forests, groves of Japanese cryptomeria, are listed in all tourist guides as the most beautiful corners of Japan. The pearl of the Japanese landscape is Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan (424 meters). It is located in the former crater of a volcano and has such a regular shape that if you look at the lake from above, it resembles a huge blue saucer. Rice and fruits, especially apples, have been the prefecture's agricultural specialization since ancient times. The first mention of Akita dates back to 658, when the troops of the Yamato kingdom reached these places, pushing the Ezo (Ainu) tribes from the fertile plains to the north. In 1602, Prince Satake was sent here by the Governor. He drove Akita until the Meiji Restoration. Akita is also rich in traditional crafts. Among the well-known Akita folk art products in the country, one should highlight “kaba” - wooden boxes and other crafts lined with cherry tree bark. Lacquered trays and odate dishes made of Akita cedar, kavatsura items with gold inlays. Filigree silver jewelry and copper utensils are characteristic of Akita's mining areas. Hachijo silk fabrics, handmade using ancient methods, are in great demand. Akita is famous for its rice. Hence the excellent rice wine - sake. In winter, a cup of warm sake or a glass of equally hot local beer is indispensable to warm the soul chilled by the chilly wind.
