Tottori

Geography

This small prefecture is located in the southwest of Honshu, Japan's largest island, and belongs to the Chugoku region. Its coastline overlooks the Sea of Japan. The capital is the city of the same name.

History

The territory of the prefecture has been known since ancient times for its Shinto shrines, the most important of which is the Izumo-taisha temple complex. During the Edo period, it was ruled by the Matsudaira clan, relatives of the ruling Tokugawa clan.

Culture, attractions
and entertainment

The prefectural capital itself, Tottori, is known for its largest sand dunes in Japan, as well as the annual Xiang-Xiang Umbrella Festival. In addition, one of Japan's largest beach music festivals, the Sun In Beach Party, is also held here every year in early summer. The most famous attraction located in the prefecture is the Izumo-taisha Shinto shrine located in the city of Izumo, which ranks second in importance in the Shinto religion after the Ise-jingu shrine. This temple, built in the traditional Taisha-zukuri style, is dedicated to the nephew of the sun goddess Amaterasu, the god Okuninishi. It is believed that eight million "kami" - Shinto deities - gather in the vicinity of the temple every year. God Okuninishi himself is the patron saint of family ties, so many pilgrims gather here to strengthen or create a marriage. In the city of Matsue there is a castle of the same name, built by a local ruler at the beginning of the Edo era, in 1611. The castle was reconstructed in the twentieth century. In the vicinity of the castle there are several restored samurai residences that are open to tourists. Separately, it is worth highlighting the coastal resort town of Yonago, famous for its onsens - hot thermal springs. In addition, you can visit another coastal city, Sakaiminato: it is famous for the birthplace of anime artist Shigeru Mizuki, who created a series of works about the boy Kitaro. There is an entire street dedicated to Mizuki in the city, called “Monster Street”. From Tokyo Airport to Izumo, Tottori Airport, you can fly by plane in an hour and a half, which is more convenient than taking various trains with transfers.
