You will visit the ancient Japanese village of Shirakawa-go, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A special feature of the village is its architecture, typical of the snowy regions of Japan: 3-4-story houses are built in the gassho-zukuri style (hands in prayer style) - the thatched roofs of the houses have a very steep angle of inclination so that snow does not accumulate on them, and shape similar to hands folded in prayer.
At the Wada-ke Museum, you will learn more about the features of this unique style, and then go to the museum dedicated to the Doburoku Matsuri holiday. Doburoku is unfiltered sake, one of the favorite drinks of the Japanese, which you will be able to try in the tasting room.
You will climb one of the hills surrounding this quiet village and admire all its splendor and how picturesquely it fits into the surrounding mountain landscape.
The nearby village of Gokayama, also a UNESCO site, secretly produced gunpowder in the Middle Ages, while nearby Ainokura and Shimonashi still produce Japanese washi paper, famous throughout the country. At the Murakami-ke Museum in Kaminashi Village, you will learn about the culture and folklore of the region and listen to local songs.
